From 11 to June 16th 2023, the Living Lakes Network will join the 11th International Shallow Lakes Conference in Tartu (Estonia), an exciting opportunity to collaborate and foster new ideas among lake managers, scientists and conservationists from around the world. 

Hosted by the Estonian University of Life Sciences, the guiding theme of the 11th International Shallow Lakes Conference is “Lakes as mirrors of historical wisdom”. As the organisers explain, many nations have been able to live harmoniously with their lakes for countless generations, and in these troublesome times, it is urgent to tap this ancient wisdom again. 

The Living Lakes Network will host a workshop as part of the Conference, highlighting NGO-led Initiatives for Lake and Wetland Protection from Europe and beyond – including some of the actions from the Living Lakes Biodiversity & Climate Project, and other projects from our members.

· The European Living Lakes Association (ELLA): Fostering the sustainable use of lakes and wetlands in Europe – Laura Böttges, Global Nature Fund.

· Civil society environmental education initiatives in transboundary Lake Peipsi region – Margit Säre, Peipsi Center for Transboundary Cooperation.

· El Hito Lagoon, Spain: Successful example of NGO private management of the public good – Fernando Viñegla, Fundación Global Nature.

· Raising awareness of the invisible: The role of NGOs and municipalities against microplastics in lakes – Dimitri Vedel, Lake Constance Foundation.

· Sustainable eco-tourism at Madampe Lake, Sri Lanka: Finding the balance between conservation and economic growth – Alena Hayer, Global Nature Fund.
