The United Nations has officially designated August 27 as World Lake Day, aiming to promote environmental conservation and sustainable development of lakes and reservoirs. This date commemorates the inaugural World Lake Conference, which began on August 27, 1984, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan—home to Lake Biwa, the nation’s largest freshwater lake.

Indonesia’s leadership in proposing this resolution highlights the nation’s ongoing commitment to environmental conservation, particularly in protecting its vast array of lakes and wetlands. The Indonesian delegation emphasized the need for international cooperation to address the challenges facing lakes, including pollution, overuse, and climate change impacts.

The Living Lakes Network, through its flagship initiative, the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP), wholeheartedly supports this global recognition. Operating across ten countries, the Network has been at the forefront of advocating for the conservation and restoration of lakes and wetlands, emphasizing their critical role in biodiversity preservation and climate resilience.

Aligning Global Efforts for Lake Conservation

The establishment of World Lake Day aligns seamlessly with the mission of the Living Lakes Network. By dedicating a day to lakes, the UN highlights the urgent need to address issues such as water quality deterioration and biodiversity loss—challenges that the LLBCP actively works to mitigate through capacity building and implementation of sustainable practices.

A Call to Action

World Lake Day serves as a global call to action, encouraging communities, policymakers, and organizations to prioritize the health of lake ecosystems. The Living Lakes Network invites its members, partners, and the public to engage in activities that promote lake conservation, such as educational programs, clean-up initiatives, and policy advocacy.

As the first observance of World Lake Day approaches on August 27, 2025, the Living Lakes Network reaffirms its dedication to supporting global efforts in lake and wetland conservation.
