A Hackathon for Water and Land

In celebration of World Water Day 2025, the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS), in partnership with the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB), hosted the second edition of the Water Resource Modelling Hackathon. The event spotlighted innovative, youth-led solutions for water resource management and erosion control—highlighting the vital connection between land and water systems.

Launched as part of the Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP), the hackathon drew student teams from universities across Rwanda. Participants developed data-driven models to address real-world environmental challenges, applying scientific knowledge to improve local water systems and restore degraded landscapes.

Recognizing Youth as Environmental Leaders

“This hackathon reflects ARCOS’ commitment to engaging youth in science-based conservation,” said Jean Paul Kubwimana, Director of Conservation Programmes at ARCOS. “We are proud to see young people applying their skills toward real environmental solutions through the Living Lakes initiative.”

Awarded student Soumaya Uwimana shared her experience:
“It’s a proud moment for me. Being part of this competition not only sharpened my skills but also made me realize the power of youth in solving environmental issues.”

Support for Sustainable Innovation

The initiative is supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI). In Rwanda, the LLBCP focuses on the Koko River sub-catchment in Gihango Sector, Rutsiro District, working to conserve freshwater ecosystems and empower communities through education, restoration, and innovation.

A Vision for the Future

“Water is a critical resource for our future,” said Dr. Emmanuel Rukundo, Director General of the Rwanda Water Resources Board. “I am truly impressed by the level of innovation and commitment shown by these young people. They are shaping the solutions of tomorrow.”

The ARCOS-led hackathon is a powerful example of how the Living Lakes Network fosters local innovation while advancing global goals for climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and sustainable water management.
